Dwelling alone under the Sierra Nevada Sugar Pines in the Gold Rush, she answers only to herself. She has been called a prostitute, a witch, and a healer, but as long as she is independent, she pays no mind and wishes no harm. At one with her place on the mountain, she sings at sunset while sweeping her porch in preparation for those who come to her for comfort.
Yosemite Valley has a way of enrapturing and putting under a spell anyone who comes to see her. Yes, I view this place as female, most likely because ever since I first heard the legend of Tis-sa-ack,
the woman whose tear-stained face can be seen
on Half Dome, I’ve been a bit obsessed. It is like
no other place I’ve ever been to and I am always heartbroken to leave. She seems to cradle some sort of healing spirit. Although I have no way of un-doing the damage that “civilisation” has done to her and her First Nations children who once lived there so peacefully, I will always enter her space with a reverent and respectful heart.
lyrics
Needle, needle fall to the floor.
Did your Sugar Pine let you go?
Brush them, brush them up off the floor.
All my stairs must tidy be today.
Pine cone, pine cone light it bright.
Make my fireplace glow tonight!
Come and see ready me.
Don’t hesitate, I won’t wait.
I won’t wait I won’t wait.
Powder, powder kiss my cheek,
For the sunset fades.
‘Fraid of me you should not be.
When you come tell all your heart to me.
When my work is done for the night
I’ll swim down the stream.
Come and see ready me.
Don’t hesitate, I won’t wait.
Don’t hesitate, I won’t wait.
I won’t wait. I won’t wait.
Zoom In Zoom Out is beautifully reflective. Mally allows herself to be so vulnerable, but the underlying flow shows an incredibly strong woman. I'm honoured to have had a part in it. Hazel Iris
