A great volcanic plug rising out of the ocean,
she is no longer what she used to be. She thinks back over the eons and remembers when she was fearsome, powerful and alive. Overwhelmed by the flood of memories of long-ago glories, she is exhausted. She is the land.
Morro Rock is one of the Nine Sisters, a chain of remnant necks of extinct volcanoes dating back 27-23 million years ago. A holy place to the Chumash and Salinan tribes, it has always been a mysterious and familiar gestalt in the back of my mind.
lyrics
I have grown stagnant - still, much too long.
Where is my tremor and my quake gone?
I often hear them echoed in air,
Poems and stories telling despair.
I can remember when I was strong
And the red currents hummed to my song!
I have had glories spread of my fame,
Dancing and praying all to my name.
And as the surface of waters grew near,
Oh how I simmered. Oh how they seared.
Before the wandering things came to be
I grew in stature just earth and me!
There is no meaning to time and space
I have grown weary here in my place.
I’ll keep on sleeping, awaken no more
Gone is the mystery deep in my core.
Zoom In Zoom Out is beautifully reflective. Mally allows herself to be so vulnerable, but the underlying flow shows an incredibly strong woman. I'm honoured to have had a part in it. Hazel Iris
