At a crossroads in a barren space, she feels the past, present and future pressing in as the lonely desert winds race up the back of the mountain. She is of two minds: to stay among the living or not?
Mono Lake is an eerie in-between place that
I discovered long ago by leafing through old National Geographic magazines. A strange body of water in the high desert, it nestles at the feet of the mountains and looks as though it belongs to the land of the dead - its tufa towers seeming to host uncanny spirits.
High pH levels and salt concentration mean that fish cannot survive. Yet this lake provides a critical habitat for annual migratory birds that feed on alkali flies and the shrimp which flourish in it, and the Kutzadika’a once lived near its banks for part of each year.
For years I dreamt of going to see it and to find that funny magical feeling I first got from those old photos. Then one very still day, as summer began to fade and autumn was on the move, I went. It was old, harsh, weird, and beautiful. I have stayed happily haunted ever since.
lyrics
I feel a change in me, slow motion such relief. New days and nights in sight.
What’s going to happen tonight?
What did you say to me? Don’t be afraid repeat No yesterday today.
Thoughts and cares carry away.
Summer’s gone, oh Summer’s gone, Oh Summer’s gone, oh Summer’s gone. Winter is calling,
My heart is falling deep in love.
In love.
Old days forever lost. Faces have paid the cost. Touch me - am I here too?
Call me and I’ll run with you.
Summer’s gone, oh Summer’s gone, Oh Summer’s gone, oh Summer’s gone. Winter is calling,
My heart is falling.
Summer’s gone, oh Summer’s gone, Oh Summer’s gone, oh Summer’s gone. Winter is calling,
My heart is falling deep in love.
In love.
In love.
Zoom In Zoom Out is beautifully reflective. Mally allows herself to be so vulnerable, but the underlying flow shows an incredibly strong woman. I'm honoured to have had a part in it. Hazel Iris
